How do I become an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)?

Complete an EMT Basic Training. Courses range in length from eight weeks to 4 four months, depending on number of hours spent in class. Intensive classes meet 18 18 hours per week and are eight weeks longs, while semester long classes, take four months to complete. EMT Courses are 160-180 hours of coursework.

How old do I have to be to become an EMT?

You need to be at least 16 years old to become certified in CT. You may begin a class before turning 16?

How long is the EMT Test?

The EMT-Basic test is given via a computer and is a Computer Adaptive Test (i.e., the test is adapted based on the student’s aptitude). The number of questions on the EMT-Basic exam will range from 70 to 120 based on the EMT student’s aptitude. You will be given a maximum of two hours to complete the EMT-Basic exam.

How much can an EMT make?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median salary of EMS workers was $31,980 per year, or about $15.38 per hour in 2014. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $20,860, and the top 10 percent earned about $55,110.

What can I expect to learn during my EMT Course?

You will about patient assessment, how to treat medical and trauma emergencies. You will also learn about pediatric emergencies, safe emergency operations, etc.

How do I become a volunteer EMT?

You will need to find an EMT Course that fits your schedule. Complete course and complete certification testing. Many towns utilize volunteer EMTs. Many EMS agencies will reimburse you for cost of course after volunteering during a probationary period.

I heard some Volunteer EMTs get paid. Is that true?

There are many volunteer ambulance services in CT that pay EMTs on a per call basis or a stipend for number of hours on schedule.
