Description
In today’s world, effective communication is critical to every public safety operation. The Public Information Officer (PIO) Course prepares Fire, EMS, and Law Enforcement personnel to serve as the voice of their agency—before, during, and after an emergency.
This interactive, scenario-based training introduces participants to the essential functions, responsibilities, and challenges of a PIO. Through a combination of classroom instruction, case studies, and media simulations, students will learn how to manage information flow, coordinate messaging with other agencies, and build trust with the public and the press.
Course Topics Include:
- The Role and Responsibilities of the PIO
- Working Within the Incident Command System (ICS)
- Writing Effective Media Releases and Situation Reports
- Conducting Interviews and Press Conferences
- Managing Social Media and Digital Communications
- Crisis Communication and Rumor Control
- Coordinating Joint Information Centers (JICs)
- Building Community Trust and Transparency
